Me talk Scottish one day

They say the darndest things here.

  • First, I learned that to whiz is to blend in a blender or food processor (we often use the word quite differently)

  • I'm still not used to the exercise class instructors saying "poosh it" when they want us to work harder.

  • When you call someone, you call them on the telephone number, not at 01467 620410, and of course, when you visit someone's home, you call on them.

  • Cotton candy is candy floss.

  • 9:30 in the morning is often called "half nine".

  • Vegetables are "veg" (pronounced "vej").

  • Kort's getting used to having his nappy changed.

  • Most of the time you do the "hoovering" instead of vacuuming.

My new favorite is "clever"--I love the way they use this word. When Kort does something he's really proud of, people will say, "oh, well aren't you a clever boy"--and it just works.

Oh, and they LOVE to rhyme. These folks take every chance they can get to put together some catchy rhyme:

  • When you put your recycling out, please "wash and squash" the plastic bottles.

  • When you're out for a Sunday drive, don't go too fast-- "twenty's plenty".

  • When you park at any public pay lot, always "pay and display".
I'm sure there are many other fun and funny language lessons--we'll be sure to keep you informed as we learn them.
